While we gather insider insights, here are some key things to think about when deciding if, and which, team to join.

Know what's what

You can absolutely race without a team. Many drivers start out as privateers (racing independently), and some even continue that way throughout their careers. But being part of a team can offer serious advantages, especially if you’re new or want to accelerate your learning.

So, Privateer vs. Team? Both options have pros and cons:

  • Privateer: Lower overall cost, but there is a lot of learning by doing which can be trial and error, you'll need your own way to transport the kart, trolley/stand, and all your equipment and tools, you'll need to bring your own tent and get it up!
  • Team: Far higher costs (fees and services) but with it comes professional coaching, advice, data analysis, teams have a covered space with their own power and crew support and the teams often handle the kart storage and transportation.

Top tips

  • Many drivers start solo and join a team when they want to compete more seriously.
  • When choosing a team does the team offer trackside coaching, data analysis, and setup guidance as standard?
  • Not every team is right for every driver. Look for a team that supports your goals, and matches your personality.
  • Can you try a weekend with them before committing?
